[Carolina’s tone is just as militaristic as ever, as though she’s making a call straight from Chorus. She holds the pokégear steady despite the squirming, wiggling growlithe in her other arm. Of course, the growlithe can't be seen, but his little wiggly yips can certainly be heard.]

[Yeah, hold that thought. Carolina has to put the growlithe down before she’s going to be able to say anything else.

Assuming they aren't here, I’d like to put out a request. I’m in charge of a crew of soldiers who refer to themselves as the reds and blues [(though, the way she says that, it sounds more like she’s their babysitter)] and if I’ve turned up here, it’s just as likely they will, too.

If you hear from anyone going by the names Washington, Church, Tucker, Simmons, Grif, Sarge, or Caboose, please send word to me. They can be a bit of a handful, but I’d really appreciate it.

[That last bit is said with a hint of an affectionate smile in her voice.]

Training for battle... That's right. There's some kind of competitive league here, isn't there...?

It probably is because it's still so young. Try tapping its nose and saying 'No' when it does. I did that with a Murkrow... w-which didn't end well. Don't get a Murkrow.

You can train them for gym or just regular battles. Since I'm a breeder, I don't have to, but it helps them learn moves. You're probably a trainer, right? Else you'd have two manuals in your bag. Training them for gym battles takes a while, but you get things like TM's and HM's from the leaders, and it lets you use special moves outside of battle. The manual tells you about that... but it doesn't always go into a lot of detail.

[....Kid, you're not sounding too confident with your training advice there. But she'll let that one go.]

So, does... everyone compete against those leaders? What's the point, exactly?

You don't have to. But if you want certain moves, like Fly which flying type Pokémon can use, gym leaders are the only ones who can give you that. Fly lets you travel to any city you've been to instead of just walking or riding your bike back. You need the HM, or Hidden Machine for that... I don't know which gym gives you that here in Johto. In Kanto, you get it in Saffron City. There's other HM's, too.

Oh, you need to defeat a gym to be allowed to use the move. The first gym here, Violet City, lets you use Fly outside of battle when you defeat Falkner. He uses flying types, so having an electric, ice, or rock type helps in that fight.

Huh.

So, you mean, there's pokémon big enough to carry a full grown adult from city to city. That's what you're saying?

Yeah. Back when I had my Altaria, she was big enough to carry two people. There's a lot bigger flying types, too. You can catch a Pidgey on Route 29, the first route out of town. The last form is Pidgeot, and they're definitely big enough to carry people.

[Having owned giant birds helps with this knowledge.]

Tobias, a friend of mine, raises birds, and he knows about how big every one of them is.
