[York doesn't text. York never texts. But here he is, texting, and not painstakingly, letter-by-letter, like he does when he feels he has to on the PokéConnect.]
Carolina Are you there Why didnt anyone tell me i was an asshole
The three of them have a long walk back to the Goldenrod Inn after the Haunted House hullabaloo's died down and Jimmy's assured them all for the one hundred and fortieth time that he's okay. York's content, for once, to let the silence stretch. After a while, telling people things aren't their fault loses its efficacy, and folks just have to sit with their embarrassment and shame for a while. It's for him, too; he feels responsible. But York can't ever beat himself up for long, and soon enough he's just drinking in the quiet sounds of the city night, savoring Carolina's and North's presence on the road with him.
After a while, he speaks up.]
You know, I think all our dates should go like that.
[York's tone is light as always, but an emotion deep and warm undergirds his words, gives them weight.]
[Sundown finds York at the bedroom window, hands busy with something in the dark. After some muttering to himself, he finally gets a match to catch and lights one long, thin candle, then another--two in a row of nine, leaving the rest unlit. He put foil around and under the little candle-holders to catch the drippings, at least, but it's nothing fancy.
He shakes the match out, watches the flames for a while, and then sighs, staring at the flickering reflections in the glass or maybe at nothing at all.]
wait shit that sounded ominous this one is less of a "carolina its dark and im brooding like the son of batman over nasty shit i need to get out of my system" and more "hey carolina im curious about something can i ask you about it"
[North has been thinking about this for a while. A long while. But now that he's resolved to do it now, he feels like a teenager on prom night. His palms are so sweaty that the broom is threatening to slip out of his hands, and his heart is racing because they've talked it out before, but this is something different.
This is the next step, and once she's on board with it he knows it'll be easier.
After a while, just the two of them carefully cleaning the mats and putting them up, he clears his throat.]

[York sounds excited, like if he were Stripes, he'd be wagging his tail.]
I know it's out of our way, but hear me out: Why don't we take North up to that haunted house in Goldenrod?
